Words Have No Colour

Garcelle Beauvais was born in Haiti and spent her early life on the island before travelling to the United States at the age of seven. Garcelle could only speak Creole and French so she taught herself English by watching Sesame Street religiously. Garcelle lived in Peabody, Massachusetts which wasn't an ethnically diverse city. She was the only Black child in her school and people were fascinated by her appearance.

When Garcelle turned 16, her mother moved the family to Miami, Florida. Garcelle was "super excited" to go to a more diverse school with kids that looked like her, had hair like her and shared similar cultures. Garcelle says that she stood out because she 'apparently spoke proper English' or like a 'white girl'. Sadly, she didn't fit in because the kids in her new school said she thought that she was white. They even threatened to beat her up after school. Garcelle loved her "Blackness" so she was confused by their behaviour towards her. Garcelle's accent was influenced by her life in Massachusetts. The way Garcelle spoke had no bearing on who she was inside because words have no colour.
